Mother Nature's ART!
©2006 DetoursOur tour of Arizona's Monument Valley and Canyon de Chelly puts you in the middle of some of the West's most recognizable scenery and the backdrop for dozens of Hollywood movies. From John Wayne to Forrest Gump, there is a reason why so many film crews have traveled to this desert. Northeastern Arizona's deserts contain hundreds of mysterious ancient ruins for you to explore. The endless vistas and improbable rock formations create a mesmerizing experience that will make you glad that you put the rest of civilization on hold for a few days.
Day 1 - With a 7:00 am Phoenix departure, we make our first stop at Wupatki National Monument. The 800 year old Anasazi ruins at Wupatki National Monument invite you for a walk through sprawling ancient dwellings. Lunch will be served at the Cameron Trading Post with time for shopping. We will drive through the Navajo Nation on our way to Monument Valley with its unforgettable landscape. Your sunset jeep tour of Monument Valley is guided by Navajo Natives who have walked these lands for a few hundred years. Accommodations can include the Gouldings Lodge or the Hampton Inn in Kayenta and authentic Navajo meals.
Day 2 - Today we have a 9:30 am departure. We invite for a glimpse into the ancient civilizations of the Four Corners region. Canyon de Chelly is the second largest canyon system in the country, right behind Grand Canyon, and the only occupied National Monument. We will visit Canyon de Chelly's towering sandstone cliffs and mysterious ruins. Your first experience in Canyon de Chelly will be a breathtaking tour of the canyon rim right before lunch. After lunch, Navajo guides lead you to the heart of the canyon for a closer look at the 1000 year old dwellings of the long departed and little understood Anasazi Indians.
Day 3 - With an 8:00 am departure, our first treat is the Hubble Trading Post. The Hubble is a national historic site and the oldest trading post in the Navajo Nation that is still in operation. Our return trip brings us through Arizona's lush rim country. Return to Phoenix at approximately 6:00 pm.
